Emanuel Bowen
42 x 51 cm
This is the folio edition of Bowen's map of Somerset, reduced from his map initially issued in the 1750s and then published in his Large English Atlas in 1762. The maps were characterised by their accuracy and Bowen's inclusion of multiple informative panels of text focusing on points of interest in each specific county.
The folio edition was titled "The Royal English Atlas" and is perceived as the rarest of the three formats associated with this collection of county maps. The third format was the "Atlas Anglicanus", reduced even further to a quarto size, with fewer text panels and no ornate cartouches.
Original colour. [SOM556]
