Justus Perthes
55 x 45 cm
Exploratory map of Southern Africa showing the latest discoveries and routes of Livingstone, Moffat, Galton, and Anderson. A set of three maps in the lower-left corner show the sources which influenced this map: Heinrich Kiepert's map of 1855, James Macqueen's map of 1857, and David Livingstone's map of 1857. Petermann has combined these three sources to create what was likely the best available map of Southern Africa at the time of publication. Livingstone's first crossing of the African continent by a European is illustrated on the map, as is his expedition to Cape Town.
Original colour. [AFR6502]
