Early map of Central Asia, much of which is based on the journals of Marco Polo. It shows northern China, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Siberia. Major settlements along the Silk Road are located, as is Shangdu (Xanadu), the seat of the great Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan.
Geographically, the map is based on Blaeu's own map of Asia first published in the format of a wall map in 1608. This map was then reduced in size and issued in 1618 as a single sheet.
The map of Tartary focusing on the north eastern section of the continent, became part of the Atlas Novus, first issued in 1635.
German descriptive text in handsome Gothic script on the verso (image available on request). Coloured. [AS1285]
