Distinctions are made between Native reservations
and more scattered Native tribes, as well as between
Protestant and Catholic missionary bases. In keeping with the conventions of the
time of publication, outdated anthropological terms such as 'Indian' and
'Eskimo' are used to refer to Native American peoples. Interestingly, the
Hudson Bay drainage system is labelled 'Rupert's Land', and Oklahoma is titled
'Indian Territory'.

This map represents the surge in the efforts of Christian
missionaries in North America during the latter half of the 19th century. During this time, churches, often working in collaboration with
the U.S. government, sought to convert Native American communities to
Christianity and assimilate them into Euro-American culture. Missionaries
established schools and churches on reservations, promoting Christian values
while discouraging indigenous spiritual practices and languages.
