A striking German map of the Iberian Peninsula with geographical
and anthropological vignettes.

The map proper, rendered in original colour, occupies the
central portion of the sheet and details rivers, mountain ranges (with a key in
the lower left), settlements, and includes the Balearic Islands. National
borders between Spain, Portugal, and France are lined in red.

Surrounding the map are large monochrome vignettes depicting
notable Iberian landmarks, such as the Roman aqueduct at Segovia and the Court
of Lions in the Alhambra, alongside scenes of regional life and culture,
including bullfighting and muleteering.

This example was originally printed by Brockhaus in the Illustrirter
Handatlas. Published in Leipzig in 1866, Illustrirter Handatlas by
F. A. Brockhaus exemplified a distinct fusion of cartography and visual
culture. Supervised by Ehrenfried Leeder and with
illustrations by Heinrich Leutemann, the atlas made geography more vivid and
accessible using perspective shading, hand-coloured political boundaries, and
richly detailed vignettes portraying regional life, nature, and landmarks. This
was one of the only large-format illustrated atlases of its kind produced in
Germany.
