Index Map to Canada and the United States

Pre-Civil War map of the eastern United States to the Mississippi River. A table in the bottom left lists the free and slave populations of each state according to the census of 1830. Published for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK), a charitable organization devoted to providing all classes of Victorian society access to educational materials.



This map was published in the year that the abolition of slavery became law in the British Empire. As such, the fact that almost 2 million of the United States' total population of 13 million were enslaved would have been of great interest.
