Handsome late-18th Century copper-engraved map of Scotland divided into its counties. Derived from James Dorret's 1750 map, but reissued in German by Franz Schraembl. Dorret's map became the standard model for the next half-century which makes it unsurprising that Schraembl would choose to reissue the map three decades later. The Scottish mainland is depicted very accurately, as Dorret based his map on the Military Survey of Scotland by William Roy, in essence the progenitor of the Ordnance Survey. The Scottish islands, such as Skye and the Outer Hebrides, were not included in Roy's survey and are therefore much cruder in their shapes.
