Bitter Campari - Dopo la Terra... Gli Astri [After the Earth... The Stars]
A magnificent vintage Campari poster celebrating the Space Race and the launch of Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, two years prior.
As interest in the Space Age grew in the late 1950s, many international brands recognised an advertising opportunity and didn’t want to be left behind on Earth during this extraordinary extra-terrestrial journey.
This tremendous 1958 poster promoting Campari shows a bottle of the iconic Italian bitter aperitif, as a rocket amongst the stars and orbiting the Earth. It is closely followed by a depiction of Russia’s artificial satellite, Sputnik I, which launched a year earlier in 1957, sparking the Space Race between Russia and the U. S.
This dazzling poster was created by Italian graphic designer and painter, Nino Nanni (1888-1969), and commissioned by the Campari Group to promote the popular bitter liqueur as World leading – still a favourite to this day.
Full size of image with margins is 148.5 x 208 cm / 58.5 cm x 82 in. Backed on archival linen. Printed colour.
