The Tanganyika Territory, formerly German East Africa and now Tanzania, was acquired by the British after the Great War. It was a vast region, comprising the east coast of the country on the Indian Ocean, stretching west to Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa, south to Portuguese East Africa or modern Mozambique and north to Kenya, including half of Lake Victoria. Ecologically very diverse, the map differentiates the various elevations by colour, keying the differences on a small chart on the lower centre. The map is bold and clear, showing the extraordinary development of the railways in the country. There are also clear administrative divisions between the provinces, as well as roads, tracks and rivers.
This is the earliest edition of the map issued in 1933. A year later, a second edition was issued with the addition of aerodromes. This example has been backed on linen and has punch holes on each corner. Two discreet stamps show the provenance of this piece as “Ridgeway Tours, Lancaster, PA. Managed by Christian H. Shenk.” This example was made to hang on the wall of a travel office.
