Turkey in Asia - Eastern Division (Armenia, Kudistan & c)

The eastern part of the Ottoman Empire in Asia, comprising of modern Iraq, Armenia, and eastern Turkey, with Kurdistan.

This is an unusual map possibly first introduced in Bacon's world atlas. Geographically, it is based on Stanford's edition of the the world atlas credited to the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge published approximately ten years earlier. However, the map corresponding to this area was a map of the whole of the Asian division of the Ottoman Empire. This map bears a far greater focus on just the eastern division, possible as an illustration of the new border on the region after the Treaty of Berlin of 1878. The level of detail for the region at this time shows the importance and interest gained by this area in the geo-politics of the late 19th century. Original colour. [MEAST4675]
