Extremely focused map of the Korean Peninsula from the 36th to the 42nd parallel.
The map was part of an extraordinarily ambitious project initiated by Philippe Vandermaelen to map the world on the same scale and produce a map which, if joined, would rival James Wyld's Giant Globe, built for the Great Exhibition. Vandermaelen's globe would be 7.75m in diameter. There is a record of only one being constructed for the author.
Due to a lack of knowledge, little is shown in the interior of the Peninsula although the route of the voyage of the Alceste is shown on the west coast, highlighting the new discoveries of the coastline as well as numerous islands. Original colour. [SEAS5468
