Very early map of the Indian Peninsula based on the Ptolemaic projection showing a barely discernible southern projection.

This is Sebastian Munster's reduced map modelling the Ptolemaic projection of the Indian sub-continent. Following this projection, the southern extension of the landmass is severely truncated, although the map is bordered by the River Indus in the west and the River Ganges in the east, serving as natural boundaries. Much of the detail between the major rivers is difficult to place and associate with later geography although a landmass on the southern edge of the map is labelled as Taprobana, a name often associated with Sri Lanka. Munster adds more information than the early Ptolemy maps in three text panels on the face, listing Indian cities and clans.
