Athens

Ancient Athens, as surveyed by three eminent architects with strong archaeological backgrounds and interests, Col. W. M. Leake, C.R. Cockerell and W. B. Clarke.

This plan of Athens focuses on the ancient monuments with plans of the former walls and ancient topography. The Parthenon is the main area of interest, with a small inset of it present on the upper right, but other buildings, such as the Stoa of Hadrian, the Temple of Jupiter Olympicus and the Temple of Theseus are also marked. The whole map is surrounded by striking panoramas sketched by the architect and archaeologist, C. R. Cockerell. 

Other information is provided by the Napoleonic soldier spy, Col. William Martin Leake with the whole piece compiled by the architect and antiquary, W. B. Clarke, who was a major contributor to the maps of the SDUK. 

Although this example is dated 1832, it was actually issued in the 1844 edition published by Chapman and Hall. Original colour. [GRC1902]
