Piano del Porto, e degli Stabilimenti di Pensacola

Plan of the harbour of Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico, including Santa Rosa Island. Two old forts are indicated: Fort Barrancas and Fort Santa Rosa, both of which were destroyed in the 18th century. 

This map is sourced from a map first issued in 1744 by Jacques Nicholas Bellin in the "Histoire et Description Generale de la Nouvelle France" compiled by Pierre Charlevoix. Bellin's map of 1744 is considered to be one of the earliest available maps focusing on Pensacola Bay and harbour. 

This example was present in the "Gazettiere Americano" an Italian edition of the "American Gazetteer" first published in the 1750s in London. The map was engraved by one of a team of engravers employed by Marco Coltellini, the compiler and editor of the work. It is a touch more flamboyant and has slightly more interior detail than the Bellin original but essentially remains the same. [USA9942]
