Geographically, the map encompasses modern France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as part of Hungary and Italy. 

Although the Carolingian Empire ruled by Charlemagne was short lived, his influence and lasting historical relevance is huge. He united most of western and central Europe for a time and was declared the first Emperor of the Roman Empire after its fall. This is the reason why after his death, the region of Germany, Austria and several smaller associated states such as Bohemia and parts of Hungary became the Holy Roman Empire. 

800AD as marked on the map is significant as that was the year in which the Pope crowned Charlemagne as the Emperor of Rome. 

This map bears the date 1801 but this example is a slightly later edition issued in 1842. Original colour. [EUR1575]
