Scarce, large 19th century map of the Arabian Peninsula politically divided into the Ottoman Empire, the Second Saudi Kingdom and Oman.

This unusual large scale map of Arabia was issued by William Hughes, a well known  publisher, compiler and editor of geographical works and atlases. He was also a professor of geography at both Queens and Kings College London. He died in 1876 but his maps continued to be issued posthumously, usually by the firm of George Philip and Son, although they stopped using his name after his death. 

This example does bear his name, dating it to c.1870. Geographically it is based on the shape of Arabia first issued by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge although here on a larger scale. It has also been been updated to the political divisions of the time as mentioned above. 

Although Hughes was very successful in his time, his maps on this scale are surprisingly scarce. Original colour. [MEAST4761]
