Chromolithographed map of the Western coast of the Balkans and Greece with insets of Malta, Cerigo and the Mediterranean with steamer routes from London to the Suez on their way to Bombay. 

This map was first issued by John Arrowsmith in his famous  "London Atlas" in 1834, when the Ionian Islands were still under British rule. Stanford acquired Arrowsmith's plate in 1873 and continued to use it reflecting English interests in the political changes in the region.
It features four maps on one sheet. The largest shows the western coast of Greece and Albania, together with the islands of Corfu, Cephalonia, Zante or Zanti, the common name for Zakynthos, Santa Maura, now Lefkada and Corfu. All of these islands plus Cerigo or Kythira are known as the Ionian Islands.

Another map shows Malta and Gozo. The third map shows an overall map of the Mediterranean Sea showing its strategic importance to England as a means to contact with its Indian Empire. Steamer routes are shown from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Suez on their way to Bombay.

Finally, a small map shows Cerigo or Kythira.
