Beautiful map of Greece, Macedonia, southern Italy, Sicily and western Turkey during the period of the fourth century BC or at the height of triumphs of Philip of Macedon.

This map is an English adaptation of a French map first compiled by J. Barbie du Bocage as part of the atlas volume to accompany the fictitious work "The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger". This work was written in 1788 by the scholar and Greek antiquities expert Jean Barthelemy as a method to educate his audience about the ancient Greek world in a more entertaining way through fiction. The "Travels" were extremely successful and went through dozens of editions. 

Bocage's maps were equally popular and when Laurie produced his "Classical Atlas" he included this map to illustrate the last days of the hegemony of Athens. Athens and its allies lost the pivotal battle of Chaeronea in 338BC, which ensured the supremacy of Philip of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great.
