Indiae Orientalis

Beautiful decorative map of the East Indies and the Indian Peninsula. It also shows the latest Dutch discoveries in Australia. 

Visscher's splendid map of India and the Far East is based on the latest sources, with the shape of China showing the discoveries made by the Jesuit Martino di Martini, the large new landmass of Australia present on the lower left of the map noting the discoveries of the Dutch East India Company, who also served as a model for the mapping of modern Indonesia. 

Visscher published this map after 1677 when he obtained his Privilegio as shown by a note on the lower left corner although the exact publishing year is unknown. The map bears the same geography as another map published by Frederick de Wit but as both men were contemporaries to each other, it is almost impossible to ascertain who acted as the source. Particularly as Visscher was de Wit's landlord for at least part of his career.
