A rare map of the Korean Peninsula published for the Societe des Missions Etrangeres, an apostolic Catholic Mission whose aim was the evangelization of non-Christian countries.

This map was based on the information provided by R. P. Carceri of the Korean branch of the Society and was first issued in 1872. It highlights the topography of the peninsula, particularly its mountain ranges. A small key below the title corresponds to various symbols throughout the map, including provincial capitals, bastions and fortresses and more importantly for this map, towns with a Christian representation within the population. This must have been particularly important to the map maker as it showed the Society the progress their branch had made.

Geographically, it is most likely to have been based on a local map but adapted by Carceri for his use.

The map is rare. The BNF records another edition in 1886 while a further edition is known to have been issued in 1898 for the Journal des Missions Catholiques.
