Attractive map of the county of Devon highlighting the developing road network during the Industrial Revolution.

This is one of the maps used to illustrate a new edition of William Camden's "Britannia". A multi volume geo-historical compendium, it was first issued in the 16th century, but without maps. From the early 17th century onwards, a set of county maps was introduced to illustrate the geographical aspect of the work with great success. So much so, that it was still being revised, edited and augmented at the beginning of the 19th century, approximately 220 years after its first issue. 

The maps were contracted to John Cary, one of the leading map makers of the day, who used his own set of magnificent county maps, reduced them slightly and used them for this work.
