Finely executed map of Borneo based on the information gathering by D. J. van den Dungen Gronovius, Dutch Resident of the Dutch East Indies.

Gronovius is given the main credit for the drawing of this map and indeed, he was associated with multiple articles and maps regarding both Borneo and the rest of the Dutch East Indies, particular Timor in addition to Borneo. 

However, the map also states that the map was revised and corrected by Clement Adrien Vincendon-Dumoulin. This person was the Hydrographer to the second expedition led by Dumont d'Urville and was also reputed to be the first Frenchman to see Antarctica. The two ships participating in the expedition were the "Astrolabe" and the "Zelee" and their tracks can be seen on the west and northwest of the island. 

Geographically, the detail of the map is focused on Dutch activities on the western and central sections of the island. The eastern half and shore line is little known and only tentatively shown on the map. A specific note of interest is an early indication of the abundant natural resources of Borneo, with a small key below the cartouche indicating the locations diamonds, gold, iron, tin, antimony as well as the presence of swallows nests. 

Arguably the finest and most accurate map of the island published in the first half of the 19th century.

The dating of this map is complicated. As stated on the map, it was first prepared by Gronovius in 1835; Vincendon-Dumoulin added his corrections in 1839; it was included in Dumont D'Urville's official account of his Second Expedition which was issued in parts between 1842-6. This map is usually dated to 1842.
