A typical late-18th century sea chart showing the approach to Nagasaki harbour, the chief trading port for Europeans operating in Japan. It is based on a manuscript chart created by the merchants of the Dutch East India Company. The map's geographical content is basic as European knowledge of Japan was still extremely limited at this time. However, the added compass roses and rhumb lines make for a visually striking map.
