An enormous, 4-sheet, wall map of India during the British Raj, showing the state of the subcontinent's railway network in January 1890. The status of each line is noted, from 'under survey', to 'located or surveyed', to 'open'. Telegraph cables, steamer routes, forts, passes, lighthouses, canals, and roads are also mapped. British territory is in pink, protectorates and other subordinate states are in yellow, and independent nations and foreign possessions are in green. The map includes all of India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), modern-day Pakistan and Bangladesh, and even Burma (Myanmar), part of which appears in a large inset map in the Bay of Bengal.

This is the 2nd edition of this map, updated to 1890. We have seen later examples into the 1910s and 1920s. This example was dissected, mounted on linen, and sold in London by the firm of Edward Stanford. It is in its original slipcase.
