The mapping of the unsettled interior of the country is largely based on the expeditions of Sir Thomas Mitchell and Charles Sturt in the 1820s to 1840s. The furthest north achieved by Mitchell is noted on the map, as is the farthest point reached by Sturt along the River Darling. The location of the death of Richard Cunningham, a botanist who joined Mitchell's second expedition, is also marked on the map near the Bogan River.

Mitchell had previously worked with James Wyld to produce an atlas of the Peninsular War before he emigrated to Australia, so it is not surprising that Wyld would have access to Mitchell's maps of the interior of Australia.
