Large, glorious map of the eastern shore of Lake Victoria to Mount Kenya in Kenya. The map also shows parts of Uganda and Tanzania.

The focus of the map is the exploration of Dr. Gustav Fischer who made two journeys in this region: one in 1883 and the other in 1885-6. The latter was as part of a relief expedition for Emin Pasha, the German-born Ottoman provincial governor of Equatoria, on the Upper Nile. The expedition failed and had to turn back on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. Fischer himself returned to Germany gravely ill and passed away in 1886. [AFR6353]

Although Fischer’s expedition takes centre stage, several other great explorers, both German and English, have routes shown on the map. These include Jackson and Gedge, Bauman, Gregory and Thomson.

The map has been compiled by the master geographer of Petermann’s firm during this period, Dr. Bruno Hassenstein, who specialized in the compilation of maps of Africa and the Far East. Original colour. ;AFR6353]
