The map is based on information gathered by Keith Johnston of the Royal Geographical Society's East Africa Expedition. Johnston was the son of the well-known Edinburgh map publisher Alexander Keith Johnston whose firm produced this map on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society. Tragically, Johnston died of malaria just six weeks into the expedition in the village of Beho Beho (marked here as Berobero), though his information survived to form the basis of many maps of the region.
