Large, steel-engraved atlas map of Northern Algeria and the Barbary Coast, from the Mediterranean coast and extending south to show Ouargla and part of the Sahara Desert. The map marks the major cities of Oran and Algiers.
The incredibly detailed map shows the developing road network, commercial trade routes in the Mediterranean and the topography is skillfully etched across the map. The names of settlements are given sometimes with alternate spellings and the occasional annotation about the terrain and river/canal systems. A small legend to the icons that feature on the map can be found in the lower right of the map - indicating military divisions, posts and the positions of telegraph stations. In the northern portion of the map red-coloured outlines, these appear to outline the local administrative divisions.
The map has been engraved by Charles Dyonnet and the geography mapped by A. H. Dufour.
Features original hand colour. [AFR4145] (SL)
