Finely-engraved, double-page map of Canada. Engraved by John Gibson for Andrew Dury's A New General and Universal Atlas Containing Forty five Maps. This map was published in the second (1763) edition of Dury's atlas which was updated to reflect the political changes after the Treaty of Paris (1763), including France's cession of Canada to Britain.
Dury was a French Huguenot refugee who fled France during the Wars of Religion, settling in London and Dublin. He frequently partnered with fellow Huguenot mapmaker John Rocque, and even continued Rocque's business after his death in partnership with Rocque's widow, Mary Anne. He also engraved and produced maps for Thomas Jefferys, Robert Sayer, Carington Bowles, and many other prominent 18th century cartographers.
Original hand-colour. [CAN3007]
