Jacques-Nicolas Bellin
20 x 30 cm
Reduced version of Bellin's hugely influential map of the Great Lakes.
Geographically based on Bellin?s large map issued in 1744, this reduced version was widely distributed, present in both Abbee Provost's ?Histoire Generale des Voyages? and Bellin?s ?Petit Atlas Maritime.? It was the accepted geographical model of the region for approximately half a century into the early 19th century. Of particular note are several mythical islands in Lake Superior, supposedly found and named by the important French explorer Charlevoix.
