The Northwestern Part of the Dominion of Canada. 

Northwest Territory and British Columbia with an inset of Alaska. The map is based on government surveys produced by the Surveyor General of Canada in 1898. This area was of much interest due to the long running dispute regarding the border of Alaska. This most likely explains the inset of the U. S. Territory included on the map, with a border running north to south. The dispute was sparked by the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898 with Canada seeking direct sea access on the coast and the United States determined to keep control of the coast. The dispute was eventually settled by arbitration in 1903, resulting in the modern border of the State.
