Nuova et corretta Carta dell Isola di Terra Nuova

Italian map of Newfoundland, featuring modern-day St. Pierre and Miquelon, as well as parts of Labrador and Cape Breton Island.

As with the map of the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the same publication, the source of this map of Newfoundland is unknown. While the editor of the Gazettiere Americano, Marco Coltellini, sourced many of his maps from Bellin, the geography of this map does not match any of Bellin's renditions of the island. Although the engraving is of extremely high quality, the map lacks the geographical sophistication present on Bellin's maps of the period. 

Its source notwithstanding, the map did appear in the "Gazettiere Americano", a work issued at the end of the Seven Years War, focusing on the New World, particularly the West Indies and North America. It was edited by Marco Coltellini in Livorno and the maps are based on mixture of French and English maps. Jacques Nicholas Bellin was the main French source while the English maps seem to be sourced from several 18th century gazetteers including the Gentleman's Magazine, the London Magazine and the Universal Magazine. The cartographers usually associated with these publications were John Gibson, Emanuel Bowen and his apprentice Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jefferys. [CAN3073]
