Attractive map of China, together with Japan, Korea and a vast, peninsula in the north, based on the newly discovered Kamchatka and the erroneous concept of Yedso or Hokkaido.

This very attractive map of China is based on the Jesuit surveys compiled by Du Halde and drawn by D’Anville in 1737. However the peculiar curvature and shape of Korea seem to be specific to this map. The “Sea of Korea” (Mer de Coree) is shown above the “Northern Sea of Japan” ( Mer Septentrionale du Japon).

Above these seas is a very peculiar amorphous landmass which is named both “Kamchatka” and “Yesso”. This reflects the continuing confusion about the nature of Hokkaido in relation to the east coast of Asia and Japan together with the lack of information about the newly discovered peninsula of Kamchatka.
