Carta Rappresentante la Penisola della Florida

Unusual map of the extreme southeast United States, particularly Florida together with parts of Georgia and South Carolina.

The shape of the Peninsula is based on Bellin's map of the United States issued in 1744, although Bellin never focused specifically on Florida. The name Florida is spread from the MIssissippi to approximately the middle of the northern part of the Peninsula, probably to counteract English claims to Georgia, which also extended to the Mississippi. On this map, Georgia is constrained to a small part of the coast. Carolina is placed above and seems to be territorially "looser".

As usual with these "Gazettiere Americano" maps, it is embellished with a finely engraved floral cartouche. [USA9833]
