Civil War era maps of two of the newest westernmost areas under survey, Minnesota and Dakota.
This eye-catching early map of the newly surveyed north western territories of Dakota and Minnesota bears several early and interesting features. Minnesota is well defined, with its borders generally matching the modern delineation. The interior is far less known, with few of the counties shown, particularly in the northern part of the state.
Dakota is almost undefined, lacking a western border although the name Nebraska is shown west of the Missouri River. The surveys are based mainly on the work of the General Land Office (GLO) which was the body responsible for allocating and selling homesteads. The proposed route of the Northern Pacific Railroad is shown running through both regions.
The map was originally published in 1855, when Minnesota was still a territory but by the time this 1862 edition was published, it had been accepted into the Union as the 32nd State. Original colour. [USA9654]
