The second commercially available map of Tennessee issued in John Reid's "American Atlas" also the second large atlas published in the United States.
Geographically, the map is based on the surveys of General Daniel Smith in 1794. Formerly Secretary of the Southwest Territory, the area which incorporated Tennessee, Smith became heavily involved in the burgeoning state legislature of the Territory with Tennessee finally becoming a state on June 1st 1796, in the same year as this map was published. Smith would go on to become State Senator.
This is the first state of the map, with the imprint of Reid, Wayland and Smith on the lower margin.[USA9195]
