Colton's large format atlas map of Texas based on de Cordova's larger map of the State.

De Cordova was a land speculator in Texas who contracted Robert Creuzbaur of the General Land Office to compile this map from his contacts and sources. The finished product was then used for promotional purposes of Cordova's business. The map was first issued in 1849 and bears the distinction of being the first detailed survey of Texas as a state. The map was extreme successful commercially and was issued in several revised and augmented editions into the 1860s. In 1856, the publication rights were sold to J. H. Colton, who not only sold it as a separate issue under his imprint but also used it as a source for his atlas maps of Texas. 

Unlike Cordova's map, Colton gives Texas a distinct western border, although little details is shown on the western side of the State. Three small insets on the lower left show the northern extremity of the Llano Estacado, Galveston Bay and the Sabine Lake.
