Insularum Iaponiae
Rare variant of Sanson's updated map of Japan first issued in 1653 and based on the geography of Cardim and Varen or Varenius.
Sanson originally issued a small map of Japan in 1652, based on an outdated geographical model published by the Dutch cartographer Jansson.
This map was replaced a year later, by the current model of the islands, which was based on newly acquired information provided by the Jesuit Antonio Francisco Cardim and the German physician and natural historian Bernhard Varenius. The geographical shape of the map has been substantially altered.
Johann Zunner, the publisher of the German edition of the Sanson atlas, in turn has altered the layout of the map. Sanson's rather elaborate cartouche, where he credits his sources, has been substantially simplified and reduced; it has also been moved from the lower centre to the upper left. As usual with Zunner, the French language used by Sanson has been translate into Latin, leading to several further layout changes in the printing.
