A magnificent folding wall map of the county of Durham showing houses, churches, mines, mills, turnpikes, railways, and parks. The administrative boundaries are also marked, including parishes, wards, boroughs, and the poor law unions. There are several unusually straight blue lines marked on the map which appear to note the locations of 'whintstone dykes', useful geological features which were quarried to produce cobblestones.
Little is known about Hobson; he worked on several other wall maps of the counties including Durham and Cumberland and his style certainly borrows liberally from both the Greenwood brothers and Andrew Bryant but his most successful work was an atlas detailing the fox hunts of England and Wales.
Original hand-colour. Folded
