Les Isles Philippines et celles Des Larrons ou de Marianes, les Isles Moluques et de la Sonde, avec la Presqu'isle de l'Inde de la le Gange ou Orientale
Scarce copper-engraved map of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Borneo, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and mainland Indochina. In an inset in the lower-right corner, De Fer provides coordinates for the region's most important cities, including Jakarta (Batavia), Banda Aceh (Achem), Bangkok (Siam), Manila, and Makassar.
Though De Fer did not have a reputation as the most scientific or rigorous geographer, the attractiveness of his maps made them extremely popular and led him to great success. This map is a perfect example of De Fer's 'style over substance' approach to cartography.
Original hand-colour. [SEAS5078]
