Superb geological wall map of England & Wales, exquisitely coloured to distinguish 26 geological layers and formations according to a detailed legend in the upper-right corner. Two charming diagrams above and below the map provide cross-sections of the nation's geology from Whitehaven to Sunderland across the north of England, and from Land's End to Harwich across the south.
Beyond the geology, this map is also intriguing as it shows England and Wales at the dawning of the Railway Age. A complex web of railways, both completed (red lines) and planned (blue lines), are marked. Given that the first passenger railway in the UK, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, only began operating in 1830, the extent of the completed railway tracks in 1837 is extraordinary.
Original hand-colour. Folded. [GB2020]
