Highly attractive geological map of England based on the research of William Smith and coloured to match a key on the left centre.
The basis for this map is the paradigm work performed by the great William Smith. The layers and geological detail is keyed to a small chart on the centre left of the map while a small panel of remarks below state that the “remains of elephants and other large animals have been found in many parts of England” while “shark teeth abound in Oxfordshire and in the interior of Norfolk is a bed of oyster shells 9 miles long & 18 feet thick.” Several vignettes are present on the map including a coal mine, a slate quarry and an image of the Needles or famous free standing cliffs off the Isle of Wight on the south coast.
This image formed part of a vast archive published by James Reynolds for educational purposes and sold in a series of portfolios the size of books but with the cards loose. These portfolios covered multiple subjects from the sciences, geography, geology, astronomy, architecture and natural history among many others. They are printed on stiff card and very attractively and expertly coloured contemporaneously to time of publishing.
