Rangoon to Bangkok
Detailed map showing the transport routes between Rangoon or modern Yangon in Myanmar and Bangkok, then in Siam now modern Thailand.
The lower right of the map states that it was printed in September 1945 by the "63 Rep Group". This was actually the 63 Map Reproduction Group. These Groups were specialist support units set up to follow the military into the field and provide onsite printed maps for military use. These maps were often quite rough and always very functional, but they played a vital part in any campaign. The 63 was formed in 1943 and destined for the Far Eastern theatre. As a Group, their complement included two printing presses and they were attached to the Indian Engineers. Due to the dangers being stationed in a war zone, they were unable to engage in any surveying, instead printing the surveys first made by the Survey of India, often adjusted for specific formats or purposes.
One example is this map, which, on the lower left, states that it was 'Specially printed for released prisoners and internees', and was designed to provide guidance for these individuals if they wanted to travel to Bangkok. Printed colour. SL [SEAS4966]
