Large and detailed map of central India, primarily the modern-day state of Madhya Pradesh, with parts of northern Maharashtra and eastern Gujarat. Major cities shown on the map include Surat, Indore, Bhopal, and Vadodara.
This map was drawn and elegantly engraved by Aaron Arrowsmith based on surveys conducted by officers under the command of Major General Sir John Malcolm during and after the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Malcolm was given military and political command of the Central Indian region in 1818, but returned to Britain in 1822 after being passed over for the governorship of Bombay. This map appeared in Sir John Malcolm's Memoir of Central India and Malwa (1824), a detailed report on the state of British interests in central India after the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-18).
