This map is a reduced version of Sanson's large map of the Peninsula first issued in 1654. The coastline has been re-drawn and departs from the shape originally introduced by van Linschoten in his map of 1599. Sanson's map, in both its sizes acted as a template for the Peninsula for over fifty years.

The engraver of this edition of the map is A. de Winter, whose name is added on the lower right. The title is in Dutch. This identifies the map as being included in the 1705 edition of the "Curieuse Aenmercking der bysonderste Oos en West-Indische", a work describing the history, manners, costumes and mode of living of the people in the East and West Indies. It was published by Joannes Ribbius and Simon de Vries. The work was first issued in 1682 and illustrated with maps by Sanson. [MEAST4667]
