Map of the United States shown at a pivotal period in its history just previous to the Mexican American War and with Texas shown as an independent Republic.

Flemming shows the United States up to its 29 States or Territories along with three new Districts of Columbia, Missouri and Oregon. The Mexican border is shown running along the 42nd parallel in the west as per the Adams Onis Treaty. The U.S. Canadian boundary is shown as interpreted by the British, along the 49th parallel and not including any part of Vancouver. This would be formalized in the 1846 Treaty with Great Britain which the U.S. signed before they embarked upon the Mexican American War.

Of particular note is the depiction of Texas, here shown on the map but separated from the United States, thus acknowledging its independence. The Independent Republic of Texas was a short-lived entity (1836-45) but of great interest to Germany. German immigration to the United States was a very strong and Texas was one of the favoured destinations. Indeed, just west of Austin is an area labelled “Deutsche Kolonie”. There was even a Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas dedicated to facilitating immigration to the State, which was founded just after the foundation of the Independent Republic.
