Important map of European Russia based on de L'Isle and based on documents archived in the French Academy of Sciences.
Guillaume de L'Isle was the foremost French map maker of the late 17th and early 18th century and was instrumental in establishing the French map trade that would overtake the Dutch publishing houses both in cartographic knowledge and quality. Among his many accolades was his induction into the French Academy of Sciences at the extraordinarily young age of 27 in 1702. This gave him access to a whole archive of cartographic material unavailable to anyone else.
Among this archive was a collection of Russian maps provided by the court of Peter the Great who maintained a close and friendly contact with the court of Louis XIV. These maps served as a basis for this highly accurate map of the region first published in de L'Isle's atlas around 1700. It was the most accurate map of the country published at the time and, as was usual for de L'Isle, often revised, augmented and edited for later editions.
This particular example is the Dutch edition of the map, issued by Pierre Covens and Cornelius Mortier (established as Covens and Mortier).
Original hand colour. [RUS2622]
