Thomson's map is broadly derived from D'Anville's map of the Peninsula which he in turn compiled from multiple sources including Ottoman manuscripts to which he had access. However, D'Anville's map was over fifty years old and several important European travellers had accessed the great deserts in the intervening period. These included James Bruce and Carsten Niebuhr. Thomson incorporated the information provided from these two travellers into his own map and the result was one of three great maps of the Peninsula issued in the early 19th century. The other two were by John Cary and John Pinkerton.
