Cypri Insula
Early miniature map of Cyprus with a small inset map of the Aegean coast of Turkey from the Dardanelles in the north to the Greek island of Rhodes in the south.
This small map of Cyprus was originally commissioned from Morden to be inserted into an English biography of Antonio Maria Graziani, a powerful Italian cleric who was tasked to form a Christian League against the Ottoman Empire. It was issued in 1687.
Morden then used the same map in his 1688 second edition of his miniature world atlas “Geography Rectified.” He added a far greater amount of detail, an inset on the lower border featuring the western coast of Turkey with north pointing to the left of the map and descriptive text on the below the map and on verso.
This amended version of the map was also used in the third and fourth editions of the “Geography” in 1693 and 1700, as well as a curious Latin version of the work believed to have been published c.1700, the “Atlas Terestris” which lacked the text on the lower part and the verso.
The example offered here is this last version without text.
