Italiae Nova Tabula

This is the
“modern” map of Italy, first published by Munster in 1540, based on Waldseemuller’s
map of issued in 1513.

The geography
of this map is broadly based on Waldseemuller’s map of the same country issued
in his “Geographia” in 1513. However, Munster adds substantial natural detail,
specifically multiple mountain ranges, rivers as well as little city images to symbolize
important settlements as opposed to the more sparse source map. In this he
emulates later issues of the Waldseemuller Geographia published in the early 16th
century. Oddly, he also omits far more place names in comparison to the
Waldseemuller. However, Munster does add a panel on the left with additional geographical
